3rd Grade - Stone Mountain
Mrs. Easler's third grade class visited Stone Mountain on September 12, 2008. Upon arrival
at Stone Mountain, the students and adults took the Summit Skyride. This
high-speed Swiss cable car carried everyone more than 825 feet to the top of Stone Mountain. Although
it was foggy, everyone enjoyed walking and exploring on the mountain top. After returning to the
base of the mountain, the students visited the Antebellum Farmyard where they enjoyed petting the sheep and
goats. Next everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch at the Georgia Pavilion. As lunch settled, the students
climbed aboard the Scenic Railroad train with a full size locomotive from the 1940s.
Everyone enjoyed the open-air cars that took them on a five-mile excursion around the mountain. A favorite
of most students was the 4-D movie Tall Tales of the South. The students wore special
glasses to watch the 3D movie and special theater effects brought it to life. Before departing for Briarwood,
the students were able to shop in the Crossroads area.

5th Grade Jekyll Island

Mrs. McGahee's fifth grade class went to the Jekyll Island 4-H Center on February 6-8, 2008.
The students went to sea turtle class, herpatology class, marsh class and learned about accretion, and erosion. In the
classes, students were able to pet a baby alligator, hold turtles, and touch a corn snake, hognose snake,
and a gopher tortoise. In the marsh, groups covered the faces with mud for a detritus facial. In the Slough, students
caught, bugs, spiders, tadpoles, fish, snails, and other small creatures. Some were put into a bucket and discussed.
Another interesting activity was eating sea pickles which some described as a "weed filled with salt".
"KP", which stands for kitchen patrol or kitchen party, was a fun task. A night walk was the
highlight for some students, and they learned that when you rub the wet sand, the plankton
make a spark to defend themselves. Climing the grandfather tree was a class favorite.
